30 Years, A Thousand Chapters, One Love ❤️

October 22, 1996. A cold, snowy day in Toronto.

I remember driving myself to my own wedding. No grand venue, no beautiful decorations, no elaborate celebrations. Just a small office unit in Don Mills that doubled as a temple.

And a young woman behind the steering wheel, filled with a thousand emotions. I was scared. Nervous. Unsure. Was I doing the right thing? I was about to marry the man I loved, but without my parents, my siblings, or the people who had been part of my entire life. No family surrounding me, no familiar faces reassuring me. Just me, my fears, and a decision that would change the course of my life forever.

And then I arrived.

He opened the door.

I still remember his smile. The excitement on his face. The happiness in his eyes.

And somehow, in that one moment, all my fears disappeared.

I knew. This was the right decision. This was my person.

Thirty years later, I think about that young couple and everything they didn't know was waiting for them.

We thought marriage was about love. And it is. But what we didn't know was just how many different forms that love would take.

Marriage isn't one long romantic love story. It's a thousand little chapters. Some filled with laughter, romance, stolen kisses, and beautiful memories. Others filled with bills, responsibilities, disagreements, exhaustion, and days when you wonder how two people who love each other so much can drive each other absolutely crazy!

We've built a home, raised children, celebrated milestones, chased dreams, made mistakes, and weathered storms. We've laughed until our stomachs hurt. We've argued over things that, looking back, weren't worth arguing about. We've had moments when we couldn't imagine life without each other and moments when we probably needed a little space from each other!

But nothing, absolutely nothing, could have prepared us for the greatest heartbreak of our lives.

Losing our daughter, Lilly.

There are losses that change you forever. That divide your life into a before and an after. That leave a silence in your home and an ache in your heart that no amount of time can erase.

Losing a child changes everything. Including a marriage. Grief doesn't always bring two people closer. Sometimes it pulls them into separate worlds of pain. Sometimes you're both drowning, and neither knows how to save the other.

We've lived through that darkness. We've seen each other at our most vulnerable, our most broken, and our most helpless. And somehow, we're still here.

Not the same two people who stood in that little temple thirty years ago. Life has changed us. Love has changed us. Loss has changed us.

There have been days when romance took a back seat to simply surviving. Days when love wasn't flowers or candlelight dinners, but just knowing someone was there. Someone who understood the pain without needing an explanation.

I've learned that marriage isn't about always being happy together. It's about choosing each other even when life isn't happy. It's about finding laughter again after unimaginable sadness. Finding friendship beneath the responsibilities. Finding little reasons to smile when the world feels heavy.

And sometimes, it's simply looking across the room at the person who has witnessed every version of you and realizing that there's no one else who knows your story quite like they do.

Thirty years ago, I drove alone through the snow, wondering if I was making the biggest mistake of my life. Today, I look back at that frightened young woman with so much tenderness.

She had no idea what was ahead. The joy, the chaos, the children, the adventures, the heartbreak, the laughter, the tears, the beautiful ordinary days, and the days that would nearly break her.

But she knew something important when that door opened.

She knew she was loved.

And if I could go back to October 22, 1996, knowing everything I know today, would I still walk through that door?

Knowing the challenges, the imperfections, the heartbreak, and the thousand chapters that followed?

Yes.

I would still choose the man with that beautiful, excited smile. Not because our story has been perfect.

But because it's ours.

Thirty years. A thousand chapters. A lifetime of memories. One love.

And through it all, I'd choose this life with you again. ❤️

Happy 30th anniversary, Jaan. Here's to us, to everything we've survived, everything we've built, and all the chapters still waiting to be written. ❤️
